Asthma is a chronic disease of the airway which results in difficulty breathing, chest pains, and, in severe cases, death. Asthma-like symptoms are one of the most common causes for pediatric hospitalizations in First World countries. There is currently no known cure. By definition, asthma symptoms are reversible and can be managed with proper diagnostic tools and medication. The good news is that, seemingly everyday, new discoveries are made which provide a better understanding of asthma. These research advances promise to help the hundreds of millions of asthmatic patients worldwide.
